Pueblo Bonito in Chaco Canyon. If you haven't been there, it's in the middle of nowhere, but worth spending a day. The ruins are impressive. The only question you are left wondering is why they chose to live there.
In June, we decided to take a long weekend and see some of the famous archeological sites nearby. Having lived in New Mexico for 8 years now, I thought it was about time.
"Baddie" I mean Maddie was a handful on this day. Let's just say she is pretty strong-minded, and vocal.
But at the same time, she is incredibly adventurous, showing off her agility while traversing the rocky terrain.
A big Kiva. Imagine this covered. Pretty impressive architecture. It's amazing how little we know about the people who built these structures...or exactly why. Plenty of theories by self-proclaimed experts though...
Hey...Chaco Canyon was cool...but Mesa Verde pretty much smoked it.
You don't have to ask why the ancient Americans built in this area.
I believe they call this "Cliff Palace".
Looking at the tour group gives you an idea of the size. Some of these buildings were 3 stories high. Of course there has been some restoration, but if you look at old photos from when these cliff dwellings were first "discovered" in the mid-1800's, they don't look so very different from today.
Dallin was just the right age to really be excited by the weekend's adventure.
